Big B: Bollywood, Bachchan and Me (2008)
Author: Jessica Hines; Publisher: Bloomsbury UK
In her own words, Hines describes herself in the 'About the Author' section like this: 'Jessica Hines grew up on the Lizard in Cornwall and went to clown school in Toronto. She returned to study Comparative Religion at SOAS and do an MA in film at the BFI. She has achieved remarkably little in her 30 years, having wasted most of her 20s inhaling pollution in Bombay. This is her first book.'
And this bitingly humorous tone is what sets this book apart, for this is one of the few books where the author is not overwhelmed by her subject.
While giving Bachchan his due as a living legend, she also remains strangely unaffected by his iconic status and, therefore, deliciously irreverent.
The book is less about Bachchan and more about the author. It essentially trails her trip to Mumbai and the world of Bollywood, where she meets Amitabh Bachchan and also a host of other stars.
