Fashion has never taken a backseat at any MTV Video Music Awards. And 2009's extravaganza at the Radio City Music Hall in New York was no exception. The night saw several stunners – booth good and bad – and some stunning stunts on stage, too. Here’s looking at the stars who went that extra mile for the red carpet.

Beyonce

Beyonce was channelling her alter ego Sasha Fierce on the red carpet. Sunday night's big nominee - nine in all – stood out in a plunging scarlet Roberto Cavalli mini dress. And let's not forget her jewellery - over $1 million-worth of Lorraine Schwartz hung on her body
