Kamal actively courted controversy during the making and promotion of Dasavatharam (2008).
Directed by K S Ravikumar, the film's shoot was slapped with an interim stay when plagiarism charges were raised against Kamal. The case was delayed, the stay removed, and the shooting schedule followed as per plan. And later, the charges were dismissed.
'Plagiarism' is a common accusation flung at Kamal whose films seem inspired by some movie or other (think Avvai Shanmughi & Mrs. Doubtfire).
But this wasn't the end of the troubles for the Dasavatharam team.
Upon its release, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad threw a tantrum over the film's despiction of Vaishnavism vs. Shaivism feud. It was pretty pointless for while Kamal may have taken artistic liberty to spin the story, it is based in history. Similar groups took umbrage to the scene where an idol of Lord Vishnu is thrown into sea.
And for no fault of his own, Kamal was dragged into yet another hissy fit triggered by Mallika Sherawat's choice of wardrobe for the curtain-raiser. Apparently, she had 'hurt' Hindu sentiments by choosing to where a mini skirt in the presence of the then CM, Karunanidhi. Sheesh!
Regardless, the film was a runaway hit. It lived up to its blockbuster image despite the unimpressive soundtrack.
