The Nightingale of India was awarded the inaugural Yash Chopra Memorial Award.
"We could not have chosen anyone better than Lata Mangeshkar to receive the award in the first year. She shared a wonderful relationship with Yashji and it is a fitting tribute to the legendary director who worked for close to 60 years in the Hindi Film Industry. The award is in remembrance of Yash Chopra's immense contribution to cinema. I have been privileged to have known him personally for about 35 years and also co produced many of his finest films like Chandni, Lamhe and others" said Dr.T Subbirami Reddy, who along with Anu & Shashi Ranjan bestowed the honour up the singer.
The award, which carries a cash prize of 10 lakhs rupees, has been instituted by Dr. T Subbirami Reddy's TSR Foundation and will be given to an outstanding film personality each year.
"I have come here for the memories of Yashji and the special bond that I shared with him. I still feel his presence in our lives and feel he is present right here in this august audience watching us all. I was advised by my doctors not to travel and stress myself at the function, but I had to be here for Yash Chopra," said Lata Mangeshkar on receiving the award.
Also present at the event were Pam Chopra, Akshay Kumar, Boney Kapoor, Hema Malini, Anil Kapoor, Sridevi, Anushka Sharma, Rani Mukerji, Shubhash Ghai, Jeetendra and Simi Grewal among others.
