In Indian cinema Mani Ratnam is unique in many ways. He has an eye for raw talent whether it is an actor, cinematographer or art director. Remember it was Mani Ratnam who first gave the break to the legend Mozart of Madras AR Rahman?
Among other great technicians Santosh Sivan’s career took a turn for the better doing Mani films like Thalapathy, Roja, Dil Se etc. Rajiv Menon was discovered by Mani with his great top-angle shots with Bombay. Similarly he was also instrumental in promoting production designers like Samir Chanda and Sabu Cyril to new heights.
Now for his Kadal, Mani Ratnam is introducing a fresh new lead pair Gautham Karthik and Thulasi Nair. On the technical front Mani Ratnam has given the big commercial break to veteran stage designer Shasidhar Adapa from Mangalore. Adapa is the art director of Kadal.
Shasidhar Adapa who recently did the much talked about Talaash car crash seaside set in Puducherry, told a newspaper: “ Mani sir learnt about my work through Rajiv Menon, with whom I have worked earlier. He made me an offer that I immediately accepted because of the importance he attaches to detailing. The volume of his creative demand is huge. His strength lies in compressing the scene and making it more meaningful.”
For Kadal ,Adapa has created a church set measuring 120 feet by 60 feet at Manappad beach in Kanyakumari district. Added Adapa : “ I cannot forget the way Mani sir shot a church festival using the set and the way we created a huge water tripper for showing gigantic waves in the sea.”
