The noughties are looking at reviving old films, colouring old classics, making remakes of classics and experimenting with low budget multiplex cinema. But there is also a sudden spurt in creativity. Everyone is trying to make that one path-breaking film. Young directors are holding fort and ousting the older lot, who have finished what they had to say.
Rajkumar Hirani’s Munnabhai has the audience begging for more, with Sanjay Dutt becoming synonymous with the role of Munna, a small time don with a heart of gold. Hrithik soared to new heights with the technically superior Krrish and Aamir stunned audiences with his powerful performance in Rang De Basanti.
An Ashutosh Gowarikar makes Lagaan and Swades, initiating a kind of patriotism which is both sweet and non preachy. A Farhan Akhtar makes aDil Chahta Haiand Laksh. Films like Hum Tum,Bheja Fry and Honeymoon Travels exist peacefully with aDhoom or a Veer Zaara.
There’s a place for everyone and nobody is treading on any corns. There is a revival of old values and it is entirely spontaneous. Traditional values are returning and the young filmmakers are bringing them back. It’s a time of intense activity and change in Bollywood, and it’s more than welcome.
