Quite a few actresses were in the running to play Olympic-medal winning boxer Mary Kom on the big screen.

And now the news is that Priyanka Chopra has beat the others (including Deepika Padukone) to snap up the role.

One of the advantages that tipped the balance - her stature is very similar to that of the ace boxer's.

PeeCee will be donning boxing gloves in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's ambitious biopic project. "Priyanka signed on the dotted line on Sunday. The meeting didn't happen in person, but she's onboard," said a spokesperson from the production house. "The work on her character will begin shortly."

Reports claim that the actress will train under the Olympic medallist for four months in early 2013.

"Priyanka has never thrown a punch at anybody before in real life. But now, Mary will be acting as her boxing coach for four months," said a source.

"The first two months will be spent in learning the ropes of boxing. For the next two months, Priyanka will be learning how to box like Mary Kom. Four months is very little time but Priyanka is confident that she will be able to fight like a pro in those four months."

During the four months, Priyanka will also travel to Manipur and stay with Mary's family so as to understand how she struggled to keep the balance between her family and her passion.

Mary is the mother of twins.

The film will also mark a debut of sorts for Mary Kom in Bollywood because Sanjay plans to have her make a guest appearance in it.
