Priya Anand is all smiles after English Vinglish, her Bollywood debut has been declared a hit . She is over the moon having worked with her childhood dream inspiration Sridevi, and the wonderful response she’s getting for the film. Moreover she has several films in three languages in her kitty. Speaking to sify.com she opens up on all this and more..
How has the response been to English Vinglish, considering it is also your Hindi debut?
It is mind blowing. Apart from the local press, I am getting a huge and overwhelming response from media and well wishers in Mumbai. My phone hasn’t stopped ringing! I am so happy and excited.
Working with Sridevi was a dream come true?
Absolutely! She has inspired a whole generation of actors like me. As a kid I would dream of meeting her and showing her my drawings! I couldn’t believe it when I bagged this role.
How did you bag English Vinglish?
It happened during the shoot of 180. Director Jayendra is friends with Balki whose wife Gauri Shinde is the director. On the last day of the 180 shoot I went for the audition which had been done in various cities across India already. The makers approved of my audition and I bagged the role.
How was Sridevi to work with?
Despite her hugely iconic status, she is totally down to earth! She gave me so many tips and was so warm and kept encouraging me all through the film, dance scenes and dubbing. We shared a strong bond which people say is visible on screen so I am ecstatic! On the last day of shoot I asked to take a photo with her and she laughed because I had waited so long despite being together for 2 months in New York! But I was so much in awe of her and admire her so much, that I just couldn’t bring myself to do it!
You are steadily climbing the ladder in three languages! What are your current and future projects?
Well, I have shot for Priyadarshan’s Rangrez, with Jacky Bhagnani in Hindi. In Telugu I have Ko Ante Koti readying for release while in Tamil I have Dhanush’s production Edhir Neechal. I am going to begin shoot on that.
