Roger Moore earlier played the fictional character Simon Templar in The Saint and later took up the role of James Bond. He played the character the longest, from 1973 to 1985, in seven films.
By the time he played the last film, A View to Kill, he was 57.
Moore was known for the humour he brought into the portrayal of the character. He softened the tough guy image of Sean Connery's Bond and made him more suave and classy.
