2000: The year of the newcomers
Post the successful Dil To Pagal Hai in 1997, Yash Raj Films (YRF) had nothing to offer for three long years. And when they did return, it was with two films that perplexingly had unknown names as its leading cast. The only star value was with Shah Rukh Khan, who played an irreverent music teacher in Mohabbatein and Amitabh Bachchan who played the disciplinarian principal of the school. The teacher`s music attracts a bunch of students around whom the actual story revolves. Mohabbatein was looked forward to purely as it was Aditya Chopra`s second directorial project after the madly successful Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge. Mohabbatein launched six new faces at one go – Kim Sharma, Jimmy Shergill, Uday Chopra, Shamita Shetty, Preeti Jhangiani and Jugal Hansraj. The film was a huge hit and the production house was now associated with syrupy, conservative and safe love stories.
