A.L.Alagappan , a top producer and the Honorary Secretary of the all powerful Tamil Film Producers Council (TFPC) has been arrested in a cheating case.
Alagappan, proprietor of Mas Cinema cheated a financier Vishal Jain in 2001 by taking Rs 50 Lakhs as advance to produce a film but never produced it nor did he give the money back. A case was registered by Jain against the producer.
Alagappan a staunch supporter of DMK for many years was a personal friend of M.Karuunanidhi, the Chief Minister. But about six months back he fell out with the DMK leadership over some issues with Sun TV. After Alagappan and his gang took over TFPC, they started a fierce campaign against Sun network. Later on the eve of the assembly elections Alagappan joined AIADMK and carried out a smear campaign against Karunanidhi and Sun TV.
On the day DMK came to power, Alagappan got himself admitted to a private hospital on health grounds. Last week he went and met Jain for a compromise but according to complaint filed by Jain, Alagappan had threatened and asked him to withdraw the case. Following a complaint by Jain, the police filed a case and was on the lookout for the producer.
On Friday night (June 16) Alagappan surrendered at the Abhiramapuram police station. Meanwhile Alagappan’s arrest has created fear in Kollywood, as they feel all who supported Jayalalithaa regime will now feel the heat.
