Pongal 2013 is going to be the most significant Pongal for Tamil film industry.
The controversy over DTH screening before theatre release of Kamal Haasan's Vishwaroopam is the biggest topic of discussion throughout Tamil Nadu. The Kamal- Tamil Nadu Theatre Owners Association battle over DTH is getting uglier by the day. The actor has complained to the Chennai Police Commissioner that he is being threatened.
As of now, the film which is high on promotions and has over 450 screens is Karthi's Alex Pandian, which is releasing big. The other film which has over 200 theatre bookings is Santhanam's Kanna Laddu Thinna Asai (KLTA), which is being distributed by Red Giants. However KLTA has a new problem with K. Bhagayaraj claiming that it is a remake of his Indru Poi Naalai Vaa.
Meanwhile there are other films trying to break in and get a Pongal release. Vishal's Samar which had earlier announced a December 28 release has issued ads claiming Pongal release on January 13.
But theatres are saying it is unlikely to release due to its financial problems and are not willing to book the film fearing last minute cancellation.
Arya's brother's debut film Puthagam is also trying to push into the Pongal queue and get a release. Vijayanagaram another small film has announced a Pongal release on Jan 14.
