It’s pretty unheard in movies that a sequel comes for a flop. But that is exactly what has happened in the case of director Midhun Manuel Thomas’ Aadu 2. The first part of the film, Aadu Oru Bheekara Jeeviyanu, came out in 2015 but didn’t make a great impact at the box office. However, the movie went on to attain a cult status, after it was released on DVD.
Aadu 2 releases today (Dec 22). In an exclusive chat,
director Midhun Manuel Thomas, who has scripted Ohm Shaanthi Oshaana and directed Ann Maria Kalippilaanu and Alamara
besides the Aadu franchise, talks
to sify.com. What should the viewer expect from Aadu 2?
It is a
total entertainer, with a nonsensical nature and in a caricature mould. Why did you make this sequel after the failure
of the earlier version? Obviously,
it was the amazing popularity that Aadu
Oru Bheekara Jeeviyanu achieved, after its DVD came out. There are not many
such examples that has happened in movie history to my knowledge and one instance
was that of Blade Runner. Are you aware about the huge expectations that
you will have to live up to for Aadu 2? Of course,
I am. The splendid response to the film’s trailer was a proof to this. I would
say we haven’t made much difference to basic nature of the film or the
characters. Shaji Pappan, the hero played by Jayasurya, comes back with his
back ache and his modest lifestyle. Shaji Pappan’s dressing style is being followed
religiously by the youth. This time,
Shaji Pappan has a new mundu, with
two colours. It has been designed by Saritha Jayasurya and it is already a hit.
