Maithriya Gowda, a little-known actress, has levelled rape charges against Karthik Gowda, son of Railways Minister D V Sadananda Gowda after he got engaged to a different girl in Kushalanagara, Kodagu district on Wednesday. The actress was subjected to medical tests late Wednesday night in accordance with the law.

In her complaint to the Bangalore police, Maithriya on Tuesday evening alleged that Karthik dated her since May and even tied the knot informally in his residence in Mangalore. However, the actress has not submitted any evidence to substantiate the claim. Sadananda Gowda and his son both have denied the charges terming them as "blackmail tactics".

Maithriya has acted in movies, such as, Topiwala (Upendra); Mourya (Puneeth Rajkumar) and was presently shooting for Namasthe India. Though she was not a prolific actor, she was seen regularly at film events and party circuits. She contended that she befriended Karthik through a common friend. Their friendship turned into relationship and Karthik promised to marry her. The actress claimed that they were even in a physical relationship. However, since the last few days, Karthik was avoiding her and she was unaware of the engagement plans.

"Karthik's mother was also aware of our relationship. A few days ago she told me that I could never become the daughter-in-law of Gowda's family. I was shocked, but I didn't know that he would get engaged so quickly. I was shocked," she said.

The Karnataka government has promised an impartial probe. "The government is aware of the caseā€¦ The police are examining the charges. It will be probed impartially," Karnataka's Home Minister K J George told the media in Bangalore on Thursday.

Karthik Gowda has been booked under IPC Sections 376 (rape) and 420 (cheating). A FIR has already been registered against Karthik. If the police go ahead with the case, they have to arrest Karthik him as per law.

Maithriya's family members said that they would drop the charges against Karthik in case he agreed to marry the actress. Roopa, the actress' sister, claimed that Karthik visited their home on several occasions. "He picked and dropped my sister at home at least on 5 occasions. We were not aware that their relationship had reached such a stage. We want justice for Maithriya," Roopa added.

The actress is expected to present evidence to the media to substantiate her claim.
