Kolkata: Renowned Bengali film actress Sumitra Mukherjee died at her residence here today following a massive heart attack.
She was 54 and is survived by two sons, family sources said.
Mrs Mukherjee, who acted in about 500 films portraying the role of a typical Bengali lady, was acclaimed by viewers for her natural acting skill.
Born in 1949, Mrs Mukherjee's first film ''Ajker Nayak'' was released in 1972. She received the best actress award from the Bengal Film Journalist Association in 1985 and the ''Uttam Kumar'' awards a number of times.
''Bikele Bhorer Phul'', ''Basanta Bilap'', ''Debi Chowdhurani'', ''Devdas'', ''Sesh Rakha'', ''Mem Saheb'', ''Amritakumbher Sandhane'', and ''Ogo Badhu Sundari'' were among her best films for which received wide acclamation.
