Angelina Jolie, 37, recently made a tough decision - to undergo a double mastectomy!

The actress and mother of six said she took the drastic step to reduce her chances of getting breast cancer.

According to Angelina, her doctors estimated she had an 87 percent risk of breast cancer and a 50 percent risk of ovarian cancer.

"I carry a 'faulty' gene, BRCA1, which sharply increases my risk of developing breast cancer and ovarian cancer," said Angelina.

So she decided to be "proactive and to minimise the risk" as much she could.

In an article written by her in the New York Times, called My Medical Choice, Angelina said her mother had fought cancer for nearly a decade and died at the age of 56.

Post the double mastectomy, Angelina's chances of developing breast cancer "have now dropped from 87 percent to under 5 percent. I can tell my children that they don't need to fear they will lose me to breast cancer."

The process of removing bother her breasts began in February and was completed by the end of April.

And she's not moaning the loss that would make most women weep. "I feel empowered that I made a strong choice that in no way diminishes my femininity," Angelina said.

"I want to encourage every woman, especially if you have a family history of breast or ovarian cancer, to seek out the information and medical experts who can help you through this aspect of your life, and to make your own informed choices."
