Chennai weekend box-office (Jan14-16)

Tuesday, 18 January , 2005, 15:26

Vijay's Tirupachi has walked away with the Pongal box-office with a 100 percent opening. All other Pongal releases put together do not match Tirupachi collections and it is the clear number one by a mile! With all the hype and hoopla, Ayyaa a clean family entertainer received only a lukewarm opening but is at number two position.

The surprise packet of Pongal was Devathaye Kandein with good word-of-mouth and encouraging collections. Kathal continues to bring in more audience in spite of Pongal releases and is at fourth position. Aayudham a B grade action film is at the fifth position.

Elaan, a Hindi film has released with a good opening while Iyer IPS and Dancer are sure losers.

Film Cast Pluses Minuses Trade fact

Vijay, Mallika, Trisha, Vadivel Vijay and his electrifying screen presence Same old recycled violence with nothing new in story and presentation! Opened with 100 percent from four huge screens. Grossed nearly Rs 18 Lakhs in three days

Sarath Kumar, Napolean, Prakash Raj, Nayantara Sarath Kumar's knock-out performance and good music by Bharadwaj Slow Moving. Lack of commercial elements. Youth has nothing in it. Taken a lukewarm opening.

Devathaye Kandein
Dhanush, Sridevi Good packaging by director and performance from lead pair is good. Has an old look and feel about it. Good word-of-mouth is attracting crowds.

Bharath, Sandhya A very touching story plus good performance from lead pair. A contrived climax and slow narration in the second half. Is attracting youth and family audience though the Tsunami disaster has affected the collections.

Prashanth, Sneha, Vadivelu Action scenes and Prashanth's convincing portrayal as an action hero. A clichéd story with nothing new in terms of packaging and
Is appealing to the masses as it has all masala ingrediants.

(Ratings are based on the box office collections and the cost of the film)
