George Clooney's hitman tale The American took down Robert Rodriguez's revenge romp Machete at the box office over the long U.S. Labor Day holiday weekend. The American debuted with $16.6 million to grab a victory over Machete, which opened in second place with $14.1 million, according to final studio numbers Tuesday.
