Resident Evil tops box office on slow weekend

The 3-D horror film Resident Evil: Afterlife led the box office on the year's slowest moviegoing weekend.

The fourth installment of the franchise debuted with $26.7 million. It was the only new film in wide release, and the box-office total of $82 million was the lowest grossing weekend of the year.

The top five movies at U.S. and Canadian theaters Friday through Monday, as compiled Tuesday by Hollywood.com are:
