The festival season Ramzan- Onam Box-Office has been a bit of a dampener for Malayalam film industry.
All the four new releases Teja Bhai & Family(Aug 30), Pranayam(Aug 31), Sevenes (Sep8), Dr Love (Sep 9) and Ulagam Chuttum Valiban (Sep 9) has received only lukewarm reception at the Kerala box-office.
The surprise hit if you take ROI (Return On Investment) is the Tamil film Mankatha. Ajith, the hero does not have a big reach in Kerala, but the Venkat Prabhu film which had Arjun is a super hit.
Mankatha initially released only in Thiruvananthapuram and Palakkad districts on Aug 31, and went all Kerala only on September 9. The film brought for Rs 60 lakhs in Kerala is expected to get distributors a share of Rs 1.30 to 1.40 Crore. In Thiruvananthapuram, Palakkad and Ernakulam the film took a better opening than Malayalam films and is the clear number one.
At number two is the re-released 3D digital My Dear Kuttichathan. Though it released only in 14 screens, it took an amazing opening and is steady with family audiences.
In the third place is Blessy`s Pranayam, which is getting only balcony audiences in major towns. At number four is Teja Bhai & Family which opened well on day one but subsequently fell due to bad content. In the fifth place is Salt & Pepper which continues to do extraordinary business.
