The Independence Day- Ramzan (Aug 15 to 20) weekend was rocking for Malayalam films. After a slow start due to `Noyambu` period the box-office picked up from Sunday, the day Kerala celebrated Ramzan. And next day being public holiday, the business boomed.
Both the festival biggies Dileep`s Mr Marumakan which released on August 18 and Mammootty`s Thappanna on August 19 have taken decent opening. The neo realistic Friday is lukewarm while Allu Arjun`s Gajapokkiri is just about average. Prithviraj`s Simhasanam which released a week earlier is a disaster.
At number one slot is Dileep`s crass comedy Mr Marumakan which in three days (Aug 18, 19 & 20) has grossed approximately Rs 2.90 Crores ore from 72 releasing centres. Close on its heels at number two is Mammootty`s Thappanna which released in 80 screens a day later on August 19 and carries `ok` reports. Collection figures for two days of Thappanna were not available.
In the third position is the rock steady Thattathin Marayathu which is doing even better after Ramzan in many releasing stations and new B & C centres. At number four is Ustad Hotel which too continues its golden run. And at number five is Allu Arjun`s Gajapokkiri, which is no where near his earlier releases.
