Bul Bul is the official remake of the Telugu hit Darling featuring Prabhas in the lead role.
Darshan`s family had purchased the remake rights of Darling when the actor was going through a dull phase of his career. In fact, Darshan built his career through hit remake movies. However, in the last two years, the super star has waltzed to the top through blockbusters based on original stories.
Though the remake project appears to be a misfit in Darshan`s present career graph, the movie is a clean commercial entertainer.
Vijay (Darshan) and Cauvery (Rachita Ram) are childhood friends, who get separated after the girl`s father moves abroad with family to pursue business. Cauvery returns to India in her teens and Vijay tries to woo her. But Cauvery is interested in another person and the rest of the movie is how Vijay wins over the girl.
Though the storyline is predictable, there are certain surprise elements particularly with the character essayed by Ambarish. There is a heavy dose of comedy through Sharan and Tennis Krishna.
The romcom does make an impression but falls short of expectations when compared to the Telugu original. The grandeur of the movie has been retained but songs from V Harikrishna are a bit let down except for one track.
Darshan is in his usual self while Ambarish steals the show. Rachita Ram, a TV-actor-turned-heroine, has made a good start to career. She holds tremendous promise and the most welcome relief is that Rachita is an accomplished dancer when compared to any of the present actresses! Ramesh Bhat and Sharat Lohitashwa leave a lasting impression on the viewers.
Bul Bul title is borrowed from the blockbuster Naagarahaavu directed by the renowned film-maker Puttanna Kanagal. Ambarish, who plays a negative role in that movie as a college student, addresses girls as `Bul Bul` in the movie. Ambarish shot to prominence through Naagarahaavu.
It was just natural that Darshan requested Ambarish to be part of Bul Bul.
