Celebrating Farhan Akhtar's birthday and his best roles!

Last Updated: Wed, Jan 09, 2013 11:18 hrs

The incredibly talented Farhan Akhtar turned 39 today!

When he came onto the Bolywood scene in 2001 with Dil Chahta Hai, we loved him as a director and couldn't wait for him to do more films.

Which he did, with Lakshya and Don. And then he suprised us. He turned actor with Rock On!! - also a singer - and went on to give us great performances in films like Luck by Chance, Karthik Calling Karthik and Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara

Now he's gearing up to hit the screens as the Flying Sikh, Milkha Singh, later this year.

But we are confused. Which role suits hims best - that of director, actor or singer?

We've listed out some of our favourites from his career. Could you help us decide?

As a director

Dil Chahta Hai

This coming of age film had us craving friends like Akash, Sameer and Siddharth, and wanting to go on a road trip to Goa!

Another coming of age story, this one followed the life of Karan Shergill - from a confused youngster to an Army officer.

And no, it didn't make us want to join the Army but it did up our respect for our men in uniforms.

Quite a tough one to pull off, with Amitabh Bachchan's original looming large. But pull off he did, with the help of Shah Rukh Khan.

As an actor

Rock On!!

A low-key earnest actor giving some high-voltage performances - that's what Farhan Aktar wowed us with in Rock On!!.

Luck by Chance

This film, scripted and directed by his sister Zoya, truly pushed his limits as an actor and Farhan excelled at every challenge thrown at him.

Karthik Calling Karthik

There weren't too many takers for this thriller. Something we are surprised by because we loved him as the  schizophrenic.

Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara

Farhan had us chuckling, frowning and even facepalming with his antics in this road trip drama through Spain.

Bhaag Milkha Bhaag

Yes, we know this one's yet to release so we can't really comment on it. But what little we've seen so far has so impressed us that we had to include it in this list

As a singer

Rock On!!

From Sinbad the sailor to Socha hai, this film introduced us to a breathy voice that is surprisingly to listen to.

Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara

Hrithik Roshan, Abhay Deol and Farhan sang the incredibly catchy Senorita, but there's something about Farhan's voice. Hmmmm.
