The music of Guzaarish has been making waves. Lata Kubchandani talks to Harshdeep Kaur, the voice behind the melodic song Chand Ki Katori.
How did Guzaarish happen? You can say it was mere luck and good timing. Just two days before I was leaving for the US for A R Rahman’s 'Jai Ho' world tour, I received a call from Sanjay Leela Bhansali's office to record for his upcoming film.
What was your interaction with Sanjay Bhansali?
Everyone knows him as a brilliant director, but he is also an exceptional musician.
He explained the situation of the film so beautifully that I felt I was actually watching it. This helped me empathise with the characters, and I could render Chand Ki Katori so beautifully.
After all, excellent direction along with soulful music always leads to great songs.
The song is soothing. Whose are the lyrics and the composition?
Yes, after a very long time, the audience will get an album that is musically as well as lyrically rich.
The film's music is by Sanjay Bhansali. The songs are written by Vibhu Puri and Turaz. The beautiful lyrics of Chand Ki Katori are penned by Puri, a young writer with deep thoughts.
How was the experience of singing it?
I think it is an honour to sing in Sanjay Bhansali’s films. He is known to have great music in his films.
And he gives equal importance to the music and the story of his films. Chand Ki Katori is one of the best songs of my career.
Update us on what has been happening since Rang De Basanti.
Rang De Basanti was an important milestone in my career. It gave me an opportunity to work with A R Rahman. Life has been great post Rang De Basanti.
I won Junoon Kuchh Kar Dikhaane Ka, a musical reality show on NDTV Imagine in 2008, in which I represented the Sufi genre of music. I was titled the Sufi Ki Sultana by Amitabh Bachchan, who announced me the winner of the show.
I also sang for various films, including Khatta Meetha, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, Bachna Ae Haseeno, Karzz and Kisaan.
I am currently part of A R Rahman's 'The Journey Home' world tour. It feels great to see the kind of response we get from people across the world. They dance to the tunes of Indian film music irrespective of their country, language and religion.
Now, I am looking forward to my upcoming project 127 Hours, with Danny Boyle and A R Rahman.
