Several songs of matinee idols like late NTR, MGR and megastar Chiranjeevi became popular thanks to choreographer Salim, who understood the tastes of mass audiences.

With his unique and popular dance compositions, he made NTR`s mass movies even more popular and helped Chiru in his early career to reach to the people with songs. Salim, who choreographed many stars including ANR, Krishna, Rajnikanth, Kamal Haasan and Bollywood`s legend Dilip Kumar, died in Chennai on Friday (Oct 14) night following prolonged illness.

He was 80 and is survived by his wife and two daughters.

Salim had the unique distinction of directing three Chief Ministers M G Ramachandran, Jayalalithaa and N T Rama Rao when they were actors. He choreographed more than 300 films in Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada and Hindi.

Though he earned lakhs of rupees in his day, he lost everything towards the end of his career and spent life in penury in the later days.
