The official launch of writer and The Hindu Deputy Editor Baradwaj Rangan’s book Conversation with Mani Ratnam took place at The Hilton in Chennai on Monday (Dec 3) evening. It was one of the best book launches in recent times attended by the creme de la creme of Chennai.

From the industry veteran director K Balachandar and Balu Mahendra were present. K Hariharan, Director of the LV Prasad Institute of Film and Television, Chennai and film critic moderated the talk which was lively and informative.

The book Conversations with Mani Ratnam is not a critique of his work or life. Rangan`s book as many students of film-making present at the venue said is a scholar`s reference for anyone interested in films and filmmaking. It is a must read for those making quality films.

Mani Ratnam in his talk at the book launch emphasised: "My role as a director is story telling not spreading any message. For me the story is more important than the visual." Mani made it clear that after passing out from a management school he makes film within his budget as films have to be made with production constraint.

When asked by a student of filmmaking on the rapid changes in technology sweeping movie making, Mani replied: “Technology is changing fast. Earlier they used to discuss about a film after it was over at a bus stand or coffee shop. Today viewers are doing live tweets while the film is going on. Technology may dictate the way we make films but cinema is all about the art of storytelling.”
