Ever since the AMMA annual general body decided to revoke their earlier decision to dismiss actor Dileep, following his arrest in the actress’ molestation case, the issue has resurfaced in the headlines.
The TV channels have been debating the issue, especially after WCC’s strong protest against the decision through their Facebook page. Director Aashiq Abu asked if AMMA will apologize to late actor Thilakan for their past act of sidelining him.
Yesteryear heroine Ranjini, who shot into fame as Mohanlal’s heroine in Chithram, criticized AMMA’s decision: “It's high time that The Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes (AMMA), should stop using the sacred abbreviation! It is not only an insult to every female artistes but clearly shows the male chauvinism in The Malayalam Movie industry! When there is an ongoing case, why is the association wanting to re-install Dileep?
According to the objectives of AMMA: I don't see the association as arbitrators or protectors for actors! Shame.....where is the justice for our sister?”
Producer and actor Prakash Bare didn’t hide his protest about the AMMA decision: “AMMA gives a clean chit to Dileep. What else to expect from this undemocratic bunch of manipulators who had gone to the extent of banning the legendary actor Thilakan.. Only a handful of girls (of WCC) seem to have spine in that clique. Its really a shame to see most of our "progressive" colleagues and friends opting the safe art of arse-licking than opening their mouth! Come on folks, it is time to come out.. and may be start A Progressive Performers Association!”
Meanwhile, there are many who have questioned the WCC decision to stay away from the AMMA general body.
Actress Rima Kallingal, one of the boldest voices in Malayalam film industry and an active member of WCC, said to a TV channel that she deliberately decided to stay away from the AMMA meeting as there is no point in raising the issue at AMMA general body.
The skit performed during the ‘AMMA Mazhavil’ show mocking WCC has also been part of the debates and the surprising aspect was the presence of both Mammootty and Mohanlal in it.
The AMMA stance is that the decision to dismiss Dileep was a hasty one without the required number of office bearers and not as per their regulations.
