Four tragic deaths of Sandalwood actors

Karate King Shankar Nag’s birthday was celebrated with great pomp and fare across Karnataka. Blood donations, free auto rides and many charitable activities marked the actor’s birthday celebrations. The actor who redefined the film making specifications in Sandalwood was fondly remembered by many actors who mentioned the actor in their tweets. Here we list out some of the actors, who ruled Sandalwood but met a tragic death.

The queen of Kannada film industry, known for her versatile roles in Sandalwood, she is widely recognized as one of the greatest actresses of Kannada cinema. Kalpana was a fashion icon of her times; her elegance, taste and sophistication in dressing could not be matched by other female stars of her time. The mega sleeve blouses, frill blouses are her contribution to Karnataka's style. The actress, who was unsuccessful in her personnel life, committed suicide in 1979 in Gotur IB, near Sankeshwar, Belgaum district.

Actress Manjula, is always recognized as one of the bubbliest actress of Sandalwood cinema even to this day. She was one of the most successful and prominent actresses of Kannada films in the 1980s and has acted in more than 100 films and won several awards including the Film fare Award for her performances. Beginning as a theatre artist Manjula switched over to feature films with the 1966 film Mane Katti Nodu. The actress, who had a hurried marriage, committed suicide in Sept 1986 because of depression.

Shankar Nag:
Director, actor, writer, theatre artist Shankar Nagarkatte, fondly known as Shankar Nag made his acting debut with Girish Karnad’s Ondanondu Kaladalli in 1978. His debut film as actor fetched him a national award at the Delhi International Film Festival. He ventured into direction with Minchina Ota in 1980. In a short span of 12 years the actor has contributed 80 movies to the industry. He passed away in a car crash at Anagodu village on the outskirts of Davanagere town in1990.

Actor Sunil was one of the most charming actors during the late 80’s and 90’s. It was also rumored that he had an affair with his co-star Malashri who has now married producer Ramu. It was also rumored that the duo were planning to get married few days before he met with the accident. The actor, known for his movies like Sindhoora Tilaka, Prema Sangama died in an accident in 1994, while he was travelling from Bagalakote to Bangalore along with actress Malashri and producer Sachin Mally.
