Antony and Cleopatra
One of the most famous women in history, Cleopatra is today remembered for her beauty. But it was not just her exotic looks that caught the attention of Roman general Marc Antony. She was an accomplished mathematician, a gifted linguist fluent in nine languages and a skilled politician popular with her people.
The affair between Antony and the last Pharaoh of Egypt scandalised Roman society. But, despite the risks, Antony and Cleopatra got married. But their plans to conquer Rome and lead a ‘happily ever after’ were destroyed when they were defeated in the battle of Actium. Their death is very reminiscent of Romeo and Juliet’s—Antony heard a false rumour that Cleopatra was dead and stabbed himself to death; Cleopatra heard about her husband`s death and she made a poisonous snake bite her.
