Debutant director Sreejith Sukumaran’s Hangover comes with a tagline, Avasaanikkunne illa! (It never ends). All that this film succeeds in is to make the viewers feel the same, while waiting for this mangled mess to end, even though the total running time is just about 100 minutes!
Though the film has no connection with the extremely hilarious Hollywood movie of the same title and the sequels, as anyone would have guessed this one is also about certain happenings after a drinking session.
It’s about four friends, who do nothing else other than fool around making trouble for themselves and get sloshed at regular intervals. Aby (Maqbool Salmaan) hails from a super rich household but even he has no money. (Can’t blame the writer and the director, as the popular notion is that comedy requires cash strapped youngsters.)
The gang also includes wannabe scenarist Noor (Shine Tom Chacko), Kiran (Govind Krishna) and Appu (Bhagath Manuel).
Sumesh V Robin has written the screenplay and dialogues, based on the director’s story. One gets the feeling that the script was written daily at the sets, on the shooting days, with the available “resources”.
There is no definite direction where the story heads to for most of the time, and whatever the direction is; it is all peppered with tasteless jokes and too many inane songs. Now, watching your friend pee and gesturing about “you know what” to the camera is comedy for you? Well, if it so, there are some jokes of that type all for you.
Maqbool Salman is irritated by the presence of a girl, who is behind him for his affection. But he realizes his feelings only after watching some scenes from a movie on TV, just before her wedding!
If you are still interested, there is a thriller twist happening soon after.
The jeep on which the four friends go around perhaps emotes more than Maqbool Salman, a seriously wooden faced actor with no expressions whatsoever. The less said about the rest of the cast, the better.
Hangover is meant to be a brainless comedy but the problem is that all it manages is to irk you with its stupidity. Why should one waste time and money on Z grade projects like these, with no conviction or interest?
The only guarantee that you can be assured after watching this one is perhaps a migraine attack!
