When Shankar and Vikram team up, the film gets a gargantuan opening. However, the film was not Shankar’s best, and I opened to mixed reviews from audiences. The film grossed more than 200 cr worldwide.
GV Prakash’s Darling was a hit, thanks to the popular horror-comedy genre and perfect budgeting.
Dhanush’s Anegan opened to good reviews and it pleased both masses and class audiences. KV Anand’s intelligent script and the grand production value along with good music attracted everyone.
Karthi’s Komban is a rural hit. The film was aimed at B and C centers, where it did good business. It was the perfect packaging that did the wonder for this film.
Kanchana was a massive blockbuster. The film grossed more than 100 cr worldwide (including Telugu dub) and surprised everyone in the trade, once again Kanchana brand worked for Lawrence.
O Kadhal Kanmani
Mani Ratnam’s O Kadhal Kanmani turned out to be a multiplex hit. The makers targeted A Center audiences and their strategy worked out well.
Tamilukku En Ondrai Azhuthavum
Tamilukku En Ondrai Azhuthavum is a decent hit. Made at a shoe string budget, the film got good screens due to Red Giant Movies and the sci-fi concept worked well.
Jyothika’s 3 Vayadhinile is a sleeper hit. Audiences loved Jyothika’s comeback and the How Old Are You magic was recreated in Tamil.
Arulnithi Tamilarasu’s proper horror thriller, Demonte Colony was well received by the audiences with open arms. The film had a good run and declared as a hit venture.
A small film with a large heart. After sweeping awards at International festivals , Kaaka Muttai also conquered the box office. The film is a profitable venture for all parties associated.
Romeo Juliet is another decent hit of 2015. The film had opened with mixed reviews but the masses embraced it.
Indru Netru Naalai
The film had a great Sci-Fi angle with time travel concept and luckily, the producer got his investment back.
Kamal Haasan’s Papanasam had a constant run at the box office. Although many people in TN have seen Drishyam, they loved Kamal’s version as well. After a long time, family audiences had good time watching Kamal’s film.
Baahubali’s box office record is humongous and it broke all the previous records for South Indian film. The film is a blockbuster in TN as well.
Maari opened with mixed reviews but the film got back the investment for the producers, a decent hit.
Thani Ouvan was a well packaged suspense thriller which gave a boost to the career of Jayam Ravi, Mohan Raja and Arvind Swamy. The film was refreshing and became a blockbuster hit.
Ashwin Saravanan’s Maya with phenomenal reviews and went on to be a sleeper hit, thanks to Nayanthara’s star value and a rock solid screenplay.
Trisha Illana Nayanthara
GVP’s adult comedy Trisha Illana Nayanthara is a super hit. The film took a massive opening and attracted the youngsters.
Naanum Rowdy Dhaan
Naanum Rowdy Dhaan is a great entertainment package of 2015. The film was thoroughly enjoyed by the audiences, thanks to the entertaining screenplay by Vignesh Sivan, brilliant performances by Nayan and Vijay Sethupathi. Not to forget, Anirudh’s chartbuster songs.
Thala Ajith’s Vedalam is a blockbuster. The film is the first 100 cr grosser for Thala Ajith and the mass commercial film’s success surprised everyone.
Atharavaa’s Eetti is another surprise hit of 2015. The sports action thriller worked well with the audiences and gave the actor a much needed break.
Misses of 2015
Shortlising films of the year that were duds at the box-office is difficult list to compile, given that our stars down south are very touchy and simply refuse to accept failures.
