The semi-classical dance steps for the haunting songs of Amol Palekar’s Paheli take you by surprise.

To think that they are choreographed by the inimitably trendy Farah Khan is beyond comprehension. And to think that she lends an ethnic spark to Shah Rukh Khan and Rani Mukherjee’s rustic Rajasthani rhythms?….Nah, it just doesn’t hold sway!

But SRK and Rani sway in Paheli…and how!

Chortles the female Khan. “I don’t think I did a bad job, considering I was given just a couple of days to do them”

And to think Farah was almost not allowed to do the choreography in Paheli. “That’s true,” the spunky forthright and amiable choreographer-director admits. “Amol Palekar had serious reservations about me. They thought my steps were too Western to handle a traditional subject like Paheli.”

Farah had done classical Indian numbers before for Santosh Sivan`s Asoka. That didn’t seem to convince the exacting Palekar. He insisted on a more tradition-bound dance director.
