The times they are a-changin'
India's saas-bahu television serials are popular though usually regressive in its portrayal of women and their households. In a move that seems a little progressive, Sahara One's new show Firangi Bahu brings in a young woman from England, Camili Jonathan (played by Dutch actress Sippora Zoutewelle) who enters a Gujarati household as the wife of the youngest son.
However, one wonders how an Indian family would react if the visitor was not a blonde, white woman. What if she were African American, Arab or Chinese? It's not an easy question to answer.
Firangi Bahu airs on television from November 11.
