"Vishwaroopam ban is cultural terrorism"

On the back of the Madras High Cour's decision to stay the release of Vishwaroopam till Jan 28, comes news of Karnataka and AP also opting to prevent the release of Kamal Haasan's latest film.

On Jan 24 evening, the Madras High Court dealt the blow a day ahead of the film's release on the objections raised by the Muslim Munetra Kazhagam that the film presents Muslims in a bad light. There's been no news yet on how the advance bookings at theatres will be dealt with.

The consensus seems to be that Karnataka and AP too, are opposed to the release because of Id-e-Milad on Jan 25 and Republic Day on Jan 26.

At first, it was reported that the Home Minister has expressly forbidden the film's release in Andhra Pradesh and police ensured that this is carried out in communally sensitive regions of Hyderabad.

But the latest news has it that Vishwaroopam was released in Andhra Pradesh as planned and that Hyderabad Police Commissioner Anurag Sharma was approached by some groups for a ban, but there haven't been any disruptive protests.

Back in Karnataka, Bangalore theatre owners have decided to cancel all Vishwaroopam shows today.
