Prakash dons director`s cap with Dhoni

National award winning actor and producer of meaningful cinema Prakash Raj’s maiden directorial venture in Tamil Dhoni is releasing this Friday.

In an exclusive interview to sify.com Prakash Raj opens up on the eve of the release.

Why did you take up Dhoni, a remake of a class Marathi film like Shikshanachya Aaicha Gho Dhoni , as your directorial debut in Tamil?
I loved Mahesh Manjrekar’s Marathi film which talked about our educational system where the child is burdened from LKG itself. I believe in meaningful and good cinema, that is why I decided to remake it as Dhoni a bi-lingual in Tamil and Telugu.

Tell us why you made Dhoni, a very sensitive subject which had been dealt in other films too?

First and foremost this is a Prakash Raj film. It’s my take on our educational system where the child is burdened from the moment he joins the LKG. It takes a realistic look at a middle class anxious father wants to give the best education to his child. The way he puts undue pressure on kids and the educational system that burdens the child more is what the film is about. Dhoni tells you about what happens in every middle class family. The pressure put on hapless children and how their passion goes unnoticed, forms the story.

For the first time you are the hero, director and producer of the film. Please comment.
Yes I’m wearing three hats, the actor, producer and director. But Dhoni moves due to its basic storyline which got me hooked. I took up the lead role, because I could not find another actor willing to do the role of an ordinary guy, caught in a vortex.

The star cast in the film looks interesting.
I wanted my characters to play their role with conviction and make them look like any of us in real life. I chose Radhika Apte to play a pivotal role in the film. Aakash famous Telugu director Puri Jagannath’s son has come out with a brilliant performance as my son in the film who aspires to be the next Mahendra Singh Dhoni, but can’t study maths. The father-son relationship is one of the highlights of the film.

About Ilayaraja’s music in Dhoni.
Raja sir’s music and background score in one word is awesome. His music highlights the theme and the message that the film wants to convey.
