‘Idam Porul Eval’ marks the first time union of Yuvan Shankar Raja-Vairamuthu.That itself is a big enough reason to check out the album.Let us see what’s in store for the listeners:
Singers: Yuvan Shankar Raja
‘Atthuvaana Kaatukku’ has a morose tune that is tailor made for the vocals of Ilayaraja. Yuvan Shankar Raja’s tune is simple yet soul stirring at the same time. The entire song carries a sense of pathos and is only let down by the singing which goes ‘off the pitch’ most times. Yet, it is a welcome back for Yuvan who shows glimpses of his ‘Nandha’ & ‘Katradhu Thamizh’ times.
Singers: Anitha,Senthil Dass
The best track of the album! Yuvan is truly on top of his game in ‘Eerakaathae’ with a free flowing tune & the rendition also propels the song big time. The humming in the interludes has already been used by Yuvan in ‘Yaarukum Thozhan Illai’(Thanga Meengal). The charanam portions are delightful to listen & the song is sure to grow invariably among listeners.
Singers: Sriram Parthasarathy
‘Kondaatamae’ is yet another melody which has the familiar dholak arrangements and is anchored by Sriram Parthasarathy’s singing. The tune pales in comparison to the inspirational lyrics by Vairamuthu. The song becomes flat at one point of time and may impress the listeners once the visuals are out!
Singers: Vaikom Vijayalakshmi
By this time, listeners would have got used to the mood in which the album is set in. ’Endha Vazhi’ is another haunting composition which is rendered faithfully by Vaikom Vijayalakshmi. The track has minimal instrumentation and the tune is devoid of any complex modulations. Haunting is the word!
Singers: Sonia,VV Prasanna
The second best track of the album! ‘Kurunthogai’ has some funky lyrics by Vairamuthu where he blends contemporary Tamil with regional Tamil. The composition is neat with the singers delivering their best and the tune is instantly catchy. Must listen!
Singers: Antony Dassan,Priyadarshini
The ritualistic fast paced ‘kuthu’! The composer has taken special care in bringing out the song without jarring its lyrics. In all probabilities, this song would be set in a festival kind of situation. May appeal for the rural masses!
On the whole, ‘Idam Porul Eval’ marks Yuvan’s comeback to earthy tunes without the music jarring the lyrical content.
Picks from the album: Kurunthogai,Eerakaathe,Endha Vazhi
Verdict: Yuvan gets back to the roots!
