Irumugan

Cast: Iru Mugan, Nayanthara, Nithya Menon, Thambi Ramaiah
Music: Harris Jayaraj
Direction: Anand Shankar

Album Analysis:

Halena
Singers: Abhay Jodhpurkar, Christopher Stanley, Ujjayinee Roy
Lyrics: Madhan Karky
Halena is vintage Harris stuff! It has a catchy loop and the techno laced banjos add a fresh sense of curiosity to the listeners. Although the structure of the song is slightly ‘Fetty Wap’-ish, the Harris stamp is dominant & is present right throughout the runtime. Chartbuster, no second thoughts on that!

Face Off Theme
Singer: Maria Roe Vincent
The piece that was used in the initial teaser! Harris has come up with a theme which is racy and pulsating at the same time. Much like Thupakki’s theme music, this track too starts off slowly only to gather momentum and end with a bang. Maria Roe Vincent’s addition at the end is a welcome boost.

Oh Maya
Singers: NC Karunya, Ramya NSK
Lyrics: Thamarai
Oh Maya’ is signature Harris. Starting off with the all familiar prelude, to the filling guitar riffs & Thamarai’s beautiful lyrics, ‘Oh Maya’ gets most things right. The song gets progressively better on successive listening.  Typical upbeat Harris track!

Irumugan Settai
Singers: Emcee Jesz, Steeve Vatz, Maalavika Manoj
Lyrics: Emcee Jesz
Irumugan Settai’ is like the evolved form of the rap portions from ‘Yevanda Ivan’ (Gethu) & it has been rendered in a kickass fashion by Emcee Jesz. Harris uses plenty of synthesizers in the interludes along with most of the contemporary EDM arrangements. Would work tremendously if used as the rerecording for an action block or during the titles!

Kannai Vittu
Singers: Tippu, Pravin Saivi, Srimathumitha
Lyrics: Madhan Karky
Kannai Vittu marks the comeback of Tippu after eons. The strange fusion of slow paced carnatic styled rendition is backed up by techno arrangements & fancy synthesizers which works. Watch out for the string section in the second interlude.  Lovely slow burner!

On the whole, ‘Iru Mugan’ marks the return of Harris Jayaraj well & truly in form! After a patchy ‘Gethu’, the composer displays glimpses of his glory days. The mixing quality does sound truly International here and the album indeed has a good mix of upbeat peppy tracks like Oh Maya & the instantly addictive Halena, the melodious Kannai Vittu & a pulsating instrumental track. With the trailer already looking promising, one has to say the combo of Anand Shankar – Harris Jayaraj has hit aces here.

Picks from the album: Halena, Kannai Vittu, Face Off Theme
Album Verdict: This is vintage Harris delivering a mellifluous album!
Album Rating: 4.25/5
