Sandesham,

Kumbalangi Nights writer Shyam Pushkaran said in a recent interview that the film Sandesham is apolitical.

For all those who are wondering what the issue is about, Sandesham is a 1991 hit comedy written by Sreenivasan and Sathyan Anthikkad. The film has mocked politicians and is regarded by many as a political film.

The debate over Sandesham started some years back when filmmaker Rajeev Ravi said in an interview that the film is actually apolitical and is only a comedy. Sreenivasan had retorted angrily against this at that time.

During a recent interview with The Hindu, Sathyan Anthikkad said that Sandesham is a genuine political film. Meanwhile, Sreenivasan said in an interview with the same daily that Sandesham is all that he couldn’t understand about politics.

Shyam’s remarks have brought back the debate once again and the social media is already divided over the comment.
