Jimikki Kammal translated: Here's what the Earring earworm is all about

Last Updated: Mon, Jul 30, 2018 12:23 hrs

'Jimmiki Kammal' is the song of the moment.

As the world dances to the Shaan Rahman number from Velipadinte Pusthakam, spare a moment to appreciate the fun lyrics by Anil Panachooran. Panachooran's words mix contemporary college slang with Malayalam proverbs and Kerala's cultural symbols like the Malayattoor Church and Kalaripayattu.

The song crops up in Lal Jose's Velipadinte Pustakam when students of a college celebrate a win against their rival gang after they get an unpopular teacher suspended.

With the song turning into such a rage with countless covers, here's a guide to figure out what you're dancing to.

Lyricist: Anil Panachooran.
Music: Shaan Rahman
Singers: Renjith Unni, Vineeth Sreenivasan

My Mother's dangling earring
Was stolen by my Father.
My Mother drank to the bottom
My Father's brandy bottle.

My Mother's dangling earring
Was stolen by my Father.
My Mother drank to the bottom
My Father's brandy bottle.

When a rich harvest
and a dance of warriors
came together here,
We thought of the time
when some people's towels got ripped.
Don't even try to pierce the ears
Of an angry sea wind.
You brave commander of the 'Moral' Army,
You old rake!

My Mother's dangling earring
Was stolen by my Father.
My Mother drank to the bottom
My Father's brandy bottle.

My Mother's dangling earring
Was stolen by my Father.
My Mother drank to the bottom
My Father's brandy bottle.

Lalala Laala Lala Laa
Lalala Laala Lala Laa

If a prawn tries to leap high,
it reaches your knee first.
If it tries again,
it falls into a cooking pot.
Don't try to take us for a ride.
Don't try your trick move.
Those who tried to spin us around
Ended up as round Zeroes.
Full of desire to see the light,
but too sheepish to step out in the sun.
The mask has slipped.
Go dress up for a new role.
When we went with a cross
to Malayaattur Church
You came in as fierce a mountain
but had to scurry away like a mouse
Pitter-patter falls the sweet rain,
making the grime disappear.

My Mother's dangling earring
Was stolen by my Father.
My Mother drank to the bottom
My Father's brandy bottle.

My Mother's dangling earring
Was stolen by my Father.
My Mother drank to the bottom
My Father's brandy bottle.

* A chakara or Chaakara is a rare marine phenomenon where a large number of fish and prawns throng together because of mud bank formations. In India, the Chaakara has only been observed along the Kerala coast. It is the richest piscean harvest of the year and is cause for celebration for fishermen in the lean fishing seasons. The most famous song picturised on Chaakara is in the 1975 classic,Chemmeen.

** Velakali is a traditional Kerala male martial dance that depicts the fight sequence between the Pandavas and Kauravas.

*** A Malayalam proverb that warns you of dangers ahead when you attempt a task that is beyond your capabilities.

**** Thaayam is a move in Kalaripayattu.
