After heated debates between naysayers and the hopeful, Tamil Nadu now has a brand new political party - Kamal Haasans Makkal Needhi Maiam (Peoples Justice Centre). The party was launched in Madurai in the midst of a massive audience that had gathered to see the Ulaganayagan. He started the day with a visit to Abdul Kalams memorial and family at Ramanathpuram, the fisherfolk of Rameswaram, and his hometown Paramakudi before heading to Madurai for the last leg of his Nammavar Tour.
At the rally in Madurai, Haasan made his partys ideology clear - that its neither left nor right but centre and therefore Maiam. The newly unveiled party flag too, reflected this - six red and black hands knit together in a circle with a white star at its centre. Its clear that he draws from the Dravidian movement while working towards a Makkal aatchi.
Haasan engaged the urbanites via Twitter: @ikamalhaasan The newly founded MAKKAL NEEDHI MAIAM is your party. Its here to stay, and to make the change we all aspire for. Guide us to serve you. #maiam #makkalneedhimaiam
This is fresh fodder for the cynics. And while theyre busy lashing out, heres hoping Kamal Haasan and his party continue to grow. While were not expecting any overnight miracles, its certainly refreshing to have someone on the political front with a fresh rhetoric. And rhetoric is something Kamal Haasan the actor excels at. Heres a look at some of the soul-stirring ones he has delivered on screen.
