Nikhil Siddharth, Swati Reddy, Rao Ramesh, and others
Nikhil and Swathi starrer Karthikeya is out! Karthikeya is one of the few Telugu films that stick to its genre. The movie is a suspense thriller and the new director hardly drifts from the core point. It has good concept with decent execuction.
Karthik (Nikhil) is a medical student. A daring nonbeliever. he is sent to a medical camp in Subramanyapuram. Now this place is eerie. Subramanyapuram has a temple, which has been shut for the past one year.
Hearsay is that whoever tries to enter the temple is killed by a snake. Karthik experiences some mysterious events in this place. The rest of the story is about how Karthik unfolds the mystery shrouding this place.
Nikhil has done well in his role. He is mostly seen expressing in subtle way, contrary to his energetic style. Swathi acts as Nikhil's friend in this film and she complements him perfectly. Satya and Praveen are Nikhil's friends and they do justice to their roles. Tanikella Bharani and Tulasi have prominent roles and they perform well. Rest lend adequate support. Rao Ramesh in a brief role is good too.
The film has an interesting plot. The screenplay is neat, but the climax leaves much to be desired. The director has maintained the suspense till the end. But he has not handled the romance and family sentiments well in this film. Comedy is okay.
Sekhar Chandra has given decent background score for this maintaining the required tempo of the narration. Songs are not really needed in a thriller. Here it is such a waste. Cinematography is main asset to the film. The cameraman's work has elevated the movie's mood. Editing is okay.
Overall Karthikeya is different from regular commercial movies that dot the Telugu screen. Like we said it is a suspense thriller that mixes bhakti and rational thinking quite well to large extent and we do appreciate the producer and the actor Nikhil for attempting something novel. Karthikeya would have surely enthralled more had the climax sequences were shot in better way. The last act of the movie is made in more hurried manner. Also the film does remind us of K Balachander produced TV serials like Rahasyam, Marmadesam.
Verdict: Good suspense thriller!
