After a notable debut with ‘KO 2’ that made us sit back & take notice, Leon James is fast rising to be one of the prominent new-age composers in tinseltown. Sify.com got a chance to interact with him to discuss about his forthcoming release ‘Kavalai Vendaam’ whose singles are doing extremely well in the charts. Excerpts from the interview:
How special is the album of ‘Kavalai Vendaam’ to you?
Very special. I am so happy after reading all the positive reviews for the album. Kavalai Vendaam is a new age film & there was freedom to experiment.
With Ko-2, Kavalai Vendaam & Veera, you mark a hat-trick association with RS Infotainment. How did this association come up?
I was initially on board only for Ko 2. During the making of that film, I came across these two scripts as well through RS Infotainment. I listened to them & wanted to do them as I found them very interesting.
How was it working with director Deekay?
He knows what he wants. He is very sure of that. We vibed very well and it was a comfortable space to compose for a movie. Sometimes he would want a song to be in a particular way according to the movie & I also had space to experiment and give my own style to it. It was a great working experience.
In your debut album, you had roped in some big names like Vishal Dadlani, Salim Merchant as singers. Who are some of the big names that are associated in ‘Kavalai Vendaam’?
Armaan Malik has sung a number for us. Currently, he is the talk of the country and he features regularly in the top 10 songs of the country. He liked the tune of ‘Un Kadhal’ & sung it for us. Sid Sriram has also sung a soulful number in the album. Others like Shashaa Tirupati, Andrea & ADK have also contributed with their renditions in the album.
The audio teaser for ‘Veera’ seems to showcase your music in a different genre movie. How is the experience of working on it like?
Veera is a very massy album. It is one my personal favourite among my works. I had never thought I would be making most of these tunes the way they are right now. It has an insane opening song & a full energy youth song. There is a complete North Madras flavour to it. In the midst of everything, there is a soulful number as well. I am actually waiting for the audience to listen to it.
The sound quality in your songs seems very superior to some of the common industry standards. What exactly do you focus on during your mixing process?
I do all the mixing by myself. I want to focus on developing better sounds. I want to take the mixing & sound quality closer to International standards. They keep getting better. We have a long way before we catch up.
What are your upcoming projects?
Kavalai Vendaam & Veera are the immediate upcoming projects. I have also signed another project whose details will be out soon.
