Superstar Krishna announces his retirement from acting and politics.
He cited advancing age and health as the reason for his retirement. The 70-year-old actor whose acting spans for more than five decades has acted in 300+ films. Krishna was the reigning star in mid-seventies and eighties.
Born on May 31, 1943 in Burripalem village in Guntur district, Krishna ruled Tollywood for decades. In early 80`s he was the number one star. Ghattamaneni Krishna is not only a superstar, but is also a successful director (directed about 17 movies) and producer. He debuted as the lead hero in Tene Manasulu (1965), the first colour social movie in Telugu.
He is also credited with introducing many firsts in Telugu - first cinema-scope movie (Alluri Seetharama Raju), first 70 mm movie (Simhasanam), etc. He also introduced the first James Bond kind of movies to Telugu with Gudachari 116 (1966) and cowboy movies with Mosagallaki Mosagadu (1971).
He also has the record of pairing up with same actress for more than 50 films (his second wife Vijayanirmala). And with Jayaprada, he acted in about 47 films.
He was conferred the Padma Bhushan award in 2009. Apart from this he has won many other awards like the Nandi awards, Filmfare awards and the NTR memorial award. Now his son Mahesh Babu carries forward his acting legacy. Mahesh Babu, lovingly called Prince by his fans, is a popular leading star.
Superstar Krishna has produced many films. He has directed 17 films. Krishna was elected to the Parliament from the Congress party.
