Leading production houses to pull out of Tamil film production?

Today morning at the Lyca Productions organised 3D –Digital meet, speaker after speaker was talking about Tamil Nadu government’s unfair tax system. Lyca’s COO Raju Mahalingam said at the meet that his London headquarters has asked him to stop acquiring new Tamil films.

Raju Mahalingam said : “ My head office in London has told me clearly not to acquire new Tamil titles till this 30 % additional local body tax issue is sorted out. We are currently funding and distributing 5 Tamil films which are in various stages of production, now for some time we will not be acquiring new titles.”

Another leading producer and actor Khushbu of Avani Cinimax told a news channel : “ As it is Tamil cinema is in a bad shape and now suddenly over and above a high 18-28 % GST comes this 30% local body taxes put forward by the state government, which will be the last nail on the coffin. We as leading producers will stop film production if this additional tax is implemented.”

Meanwhile there is a buzz that the talks going on between industry representatives and the government will be a success. Abirami Ramanathan president theatre owners association said: “ We are hopeful a solution will be found by today evening.”
