Lord Shiva vs. Tollywood

Looks like there is something about with Lord Shiva and Telugu cinema.

Films made with Lord Shiva as prime topic has ran into troubles. Either the film had issues with its release or the film bombed heavily at the box-office. Sometimes people associated with the film made around Lord Shiva had to bear the brunt.

Way back in 1962 NTR (Sr) did a film by name Dakshayagnam. NTR lost his elder son during the film's shoot. Chiranjeevi's Anji, which was produced by Shyam Prasad Reddy took five whole years to hit the screen. The shoot was also not a bed of roses. Finally when it was released people did appreciate its graphics wonder, but the film bombed severely.

Sri Manjunatha was another film on Lord Shiva with Chiranjeevi in the lead. It was about the relationship between a devotee and Lord Shiva. Chiru played Lord Shiva, and the film was a major flop. The Kannada version of the film did fare well, though.

Chiru also appeared briefly as Lord Shiva in K Vishwanath's Apathbandhuvudu and did `Shiva Thandavam` in the film which again bit the dust at box-office This film too flopped.

Khaleja staring Mahesh Babu also had `Shiva Puranam` as its under current theme and a special song - Sadasiva - eulogising Shiva in modern style. The film faced many problems. It over shot the budget and the making really took a long time. Its producer Siganamal Ramesh was arrested and the film also bombed at the box-office.

The latest to join this list is Damarukam, a socio-fantasy flick that deals with Lord Shiva's descent and Andhakarasura's descent. Producer had given numerous release dates for this film, but somehow the film is unable to reach the theatres. First it was said that there were technical issues and now the reasoning is that there are financial issues.

Nagarjuna who is the lead star in the film went on to say that Lord Shiva himself should be merciful. It is a wait and watch game now for Damarukam.
