Veteran lyricist Vairamuthu is mired in a controversy after quoting a research scholar’s work declaring that Andal belongs to Devadasi community.
Vairamuthu’s speech irked a lot of Hindu outfits and BJP leader Raja said that the lyricist's speech is poisonous and also demanded an open apology from popular daily ‘Dinamani’ for providing a platform and publishing the degrading quote on Andal.
In his apology, Vairamuthu clarified that what he only talked about the greatness of Andal in his article Tamizhai Andal and the controversial quote is not his opinion. “I only quoted a line from the research work of Indiana University. I don’t have intention to hurt the sentiments of anyone”, said Vairamuthu in his statement and conveyed his regrets if his article hurt anyone’s feelings.
Leading daily Dinamani also took down the controversial article from their website and sent an open apology. However, a section of people feels that the BJP leader Raja has created this entire episode into a big issue because Vairamuthu only referred to a line and it’s not his opinion.
