John Abraham’s controversial Shoojith Sircar directed Madras Cafe has not released in Tamil Nadu. Theatres in the state refused to screen Madras Cafe after they received threat letters from Pro-Tamil groups.
The Tamil version of Madras Cafe was cleared by the censors with no cuts and a UA certificate, and there is no official ban on the film in the state.
The Chennai multiplexes in their programming for the week Aug 23 to 29, have not given any show to the film. It means that the original Hindi version of Madras Cafe itself will not be screened in Chennai. Madras Cafe deals with relations between India and Sri Lanka in the late 80’s and early 90’s. Pro-Tamil groups who have watched a preview of the movie allege that it portrays the LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam) as a terror group.
