Abhirami is on cloud nine these days as her career is on an all time high. She has been signed by her childhood dream hero Kamalhassan to play his heroine in Sandiyar. It is a dream come true for this
Thiruvananthapuram girl as she claims to be Kamal’s number one fan. Abhirami faced the camera for the first time while she was as student at the Mar Ivanious College, as an anchor in Asianet. Later she made her big screen debut in Njangal Santhushtaranu with Jayaram. After doing a couple of films with top stars like Mohanlal and Suresh Gopi she migrated to Tamil where her first film Vanavil opposite Arjun became a big hit.
But down the lane she did some insignificant roles opposite ageing heroes like Sarath Kumar and Mammootty, and the younger lot of heroes like Ajit and Vijay refused to act opposite her. So when the going got tough she decided to take a break from Tamil and do glamorous roles in Telugu and Kannada films. It was around this time that Kamalhassan signed her up for Sandiyar. Sitting at her rented apartment in Chennai’s Anna Nagar the actress speaks about the recent developments in her career.
What is your role in Sandiyar?
I play the role of Annalakshmi, a rustic village girl who is kidnapped by the protagonist Virumaandi played by Kamal sir. The character is full of innocence and has a crucial role in the film. The fact that a great actor like Kamalhassan found me worthy to play the lead role proves that I am not just another charming face but someone who can be saddled with a weighty role.
How did you bag this role?
I have met Kamal sir thrice. I first met him as a fan when he came down
to Thiruvananthapuram for the premiere of Hey Ram. Then for the 100th day celebration of Tenali. Jayaram introduced me to him as a budding actress. And later we met in Singapore for the Tamil Artistes Association Star Night programme. Actually I was approached by Kamal sir to do the role opposite Madhavan in his home production Nala Damayanthi, but as I was shooting for a Kannada film and I could not spare my dates. Later sometime in March, I got a call from his office to do a photo shoot for Sandiyar. As my tanned look was similar to the earthy brownish looks of Annalakshmi in the film he chose me.
Recently there was a controversy in the media when you said that you
are willing to do any kind of glamorous roles. Please comment.
I have been misquoted on this, as all I said was I am willing to do
realistic roles. Please note that I want to be known as a performer and not a mere glamour girl.
Why did you migrate from Malayalam to Tamil films?
To be honest after doing a couple of films the offers dried up in
Malayalam and I was not happy doing roles that had no scope to perform. And at that time the meaty role in Vanavil came my way. So I decided to try my luck, after all Tamil is my mother tongue.
But you ended up doing roles opposite ageing heroes.
It was a mistake as there was nobody to guide me. I come from a middle
class family that has no film connections. But I have no regrets, as it was a great experience working with them. And now I am happy that my dreams have come true as I am getting a few youth-oriented offers in Telugu and Kannada. I just finished a campus film Charminar in Telugu opposite Venkat and two Kannada films Raktakaneer opposite top star Upendra and Sriram with Shivraj Kumar, all have a young feel about it.
Will we see you once again in Malayalam films?
Why not if it is a meaty role? At the moment I am concentrating on my
role in Sandiyar.
