Mani Ratnam is a director who always makes his films on a shoe-string budget. He will never have expensive stars in his films.
The costliest film Mani Ratnam has made is the bi-lingual Raavan in Hindi and Raavanan in Tamil, for which a Mumbai corporate is rumoured to have paid a whopping Rs 100 Crore!
Now noted writer Jayamohan who is co-writer for Mani Ratnam’s Kadal is quoted as saying: “ Kadal is made on a budget of Rs 50 Crore. This gives us a lot of creative freedom while scripting for such a film.”
The big question is how Kadal which has newcomers Gautham Karthik and Tulasi Nair in the lead along with Aravind Swamy and Arjun, can cost Rs 50 C? The only “costly factor” is music director AR Rahman, but sources say he always works for Mani at a concessional rate.
The trade buzz is that Gemini Film Circuit has purchased Kadal Tamil and Telugu version for a whopping Rs 17 Crore. So how can it cost Rs 50 Cr?
