What’s happened this week is so rare that we are surprised we didn’t have a blue moon. A regional film actually took on a big-budget Hindi film and an even bigger-budget Hollywood flick, and came out the winner.
Everyone had pinned their hopes on 8x10 Tasveer to lure audiences into cinema halls. But the much-hyped film failed to ignite the box office. Instead, Fast & Furious fared much better.
However, the film that overshadowed both was Mahesh Manjrekar's Marathi film Mi Shivajiraje Bhosale Boltoy. The film has taken Maharashtra by storm and is running to packed houses everywhere.
Manjrekar, the producer, is thrilled by the response. "I've been flooded with congratulatory calls. I haven't received such feedback ever," he says. Ask him if he plans to do a Hindi film next and pat comes the reply, "Of course, but not with stars."
